Fun Fact: Historically speaking, a simple cotton shirt deserves the name "jersey" just as much as brightly colored plastic gear with a zipper. The word originates from the French "tricoter" (= to knit), and garments referred to as jerseys existed as early as 1800—initially as fine-knit underwear. Modern t-shirts and sports jerseys both evolved from that very underwear. From around 1900 until the 1960s/70s, they were made of finely knit wool or cotton—the so-called jersey fabric, which is still used to make t-shirts today. It wasn't until around 1940 that petroleum products like polyester or polyamide were processed into clothing, increasingly being used for sports jerseys. The zipper was first patented in 1851—but it wasn't practical or truly usable until around 1900.
